MLB: San Francisco 4, Detroit 0

DETROIT, June 17 (UPI) -- Jason Schmidt hurled eight scoreless innings Friday night as the San Francisco Giants beat the Detroit Tigers, 4-0.

Schmidt, who tired in the ninth inning when Detroit loaded the bases in its biggest scoring threat of the contest, allowed seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts. He improved to 4-3.

Loser Nate Robertson dropped to 2-5. He gave up four runs and eight hits in seven innings with one walk and five strikeouts.

Mike Matheny went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI for the Giants.

Placido Polanco and Dmitri Young each had two hits for Detroit.

Chris Shelton struck out the side with the basesloaded in the ninth to earn his 10th save of the year, snapping a three-game winning streak by the Tigers while also extending the Giants' win streak to three.
