Jamaican sets 100-meter sprint record

ATHENS, Greece, June 15 (UPI) -- Asafa Powell of Jamaica has become the fastest sprinter in the world after turning in a record 9.77-second 100-meter sprint in Athens.

The record is 0.01 seconds faster than that of Tim Montgomery's 2002 record in Paris.

After running at a Grand Prix meet at the Olympic Stadium, Powell's time first showed 9.78, which would have tied Montgomery, but after looking more precisely at the timing, officials rounded it down to 9.77, The New York Times reported.

Powell, 22, finished fifth in 9.94 in the fastest overall Olympic final ever on the same track last August.
