NEW YORK, June 14 (UPI) -- Former U.S. national team star Alexi Lalas on Tuesday was named president and general manager of Major League Soccer's New York/New Jersey MetroStars.
Lalas, who briefly played on the MetroStars during his career, had been working as general manager for the San Jose Earthquakes. Previous MetroStars GM Nick Sakiewicz has moved on to become president of AEG Soccer New York/New Jersey.
"It is a privilege to be given the opportunity to guide a club that I feel has the potential, on and off the field, to achieve worldwide recognition," said Lalas.
"I look forward to helping the MetroStars become the first SuperClub to emerge out of MLS," he added, "and make no mistake; the race is on for that distinction."
In the league's 10-year existence, the MetroStars have never even made it to the MLS Cup, the league's championship game.
