Ayers was an assistant under Larry Brown at Philadelphia for more than six seasons and later served as head coach of the 76ers at the start of 2003-04 season. He was fired after posting a record of 21-31 through 52 games, and replaced by Chris Ford.

"Randy (Ayers) and Tom (Sterner) are two of the hardest working coaches in the business," Hill said on the team's Web site. "They are known for their attention to detail, the way they prepare for a game and for helping players reach their full potential. We are very excited to have them as part of the Magic family."
