Rays make Justin Upton top overall pick

NEW YORK, June 7 (UPI) -- Shortstop Justin Upton from Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Va., was the top overall choice Tuesday in the 2005 Major League Baseball draft.

The 17-year-old Upton is the younger brother of Tampa Bay prospect B.J. Upton, who was the second overall pick by the Devil Rays in 2002.

B.J. Upton currently is playing for Triple-A Durham. Justin Upton was this year's Gatorade High School Player of the Year, when he hit 11 home runs and drove in 32 runs in only 54 official plate appearances. He also stole seven bases. It marks the second straight year Arizona has chosen a shortstop with its top pick.

Last week, the Diamondbacks signed shortstop Stephen Drew, who was the 15th overall selection out of Florida State in 2004. Drew's brother, J.D., is an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
