Burnett to miss next start for Marlins

MIAMI, May 24 (UPI) -- Florida Marlins right-hander A.J. Burnett has been diagnosed with inflammation in his pitching elbow and will miss his next scheduled start.

General Manager Larry Beinfest said Burnett flew to Birmingham, Ala. Sunday to be examined by orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews and was diagnosed on Monday.

"He's not being placed on the disabled list," Beinfest posted on the Marlins' Web site. "He will be skipped in his next start, and we will see if the inflammation goes down."

Burnett, who underwent surgery on the elbow in 2003, complained about discomfort after his last start Saturday. He is 3-4 this season with a 3.19 ERA and has struck out 62 batters in 62 innings.

He was scheduled to start Thursday against the New York Mets and has not topped the 115-pitch count in any start this season, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel said.
