Quigley birdies eight holes in a row

HOOVER, Ala., May 20 (UPI) -- Dana Quigley made eight straight birdies Friday to equal a Champions Tour record and grab the lead at the rain-disrupted Bruno's Memorial Classic.

Quigley shot a 7-under 65, one shot better than Tom Wargo.

Chi Chi Rodriguez established the record of eight birdies in a row and Jim Colbert tied the mark five years ago.

Curtis Strange and Mark Johnson shared third place at 67 while defending champion Bruce Fleisher shot a 68.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms struck the area late in the afternoon, forcing a suspension of the first round. Play will resume at 10 a.m. EDT Saturday.

Quigley's birdie streak began at the 10th hole after he had played the front nine in even par.

After his eight straight birdies, Quigley bogeyed the 18th.

"If I had birdied 18, I would have gone right back to one," Quigley said. "I wanted to keep it going. I was trying to make birdie at the last hole."
