ATLANTA, May 19 (UPI) -- Atlanta Braves right-hander John Thompson will miss 2-3 months because of a finger injury on his pitching hand.
He suffered a partial tear of the supporting structures surrounding the flexor tendon in his right middle finger in Monday's game against San Diego. He has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
General Manager John Schuerholz told reporters Thursday via conference call that the injury will not require surgery.
"That is some good news when you can avoid surgery," he said. "It is a rare injury, an unusual case. It's not something that happens very often. The delay in the ultimate final prognosis was because it was so unusual and so rare. The good news is that the flexor tendon is not compromised."
The 31-year-old Thompson is 3-2 for the season with a 3.42 ERA in eight starts.
