Ruiz calls on WBA to strip Toney's title

LONDON, May 12 (UPI) -- Boxer John Ruiz called for quick action by the World Boxing Association to strip James Toney of his heavyweight title for failing a drug test.

Toney has been suspended for 90 days and fined $10,000 for testing positive for drugs. The test followed last month's bout, in which Toney took the WBA heavyweight crown from Ruiz.

"We are waiting for the WBA to immediately implement its rule," Ruiz's attorney Anthony Cardinale told the London Telegraph.

"It's as clear as it can be. We're glad the truth has come out and Johnny hasn't lost his championship," Cardinale said.

Toney has denied taking any "illegal substances."
