PGA, sponsor discuss Avenal upgrade delay

WASHINGTON, May 10 (UPI) -- Executives of Booz Allen Hamilton and the PGA Tour met to discuss why the PGA has failed to start upgrading the much-maligned Avenal course in Washington.

The lack of action on the Tournament Players Club course jeopardized Booz Allen's three-year sponsorship of the PGA Tour event it signed last year, the Washington Times reported.

"When we entered into an agreement to be the title sponsor, we anticipated that certain things would happen according to a certain schedule," said Ralph Shrader, chairman-chief executive officer of the McLean, Va, consulting firm. "That schedule has slipped, and that's disappointed us."

This year's PGA stop in Washington moved to the nearby Congressional golf course to allow the Avenal course, which PGA golfers routinely criticize, to be upgraded.

PGA officials said they would discuss reasons for delaying Avenal improvements during the meeting with Shrader.
