IMOLA, Italy, April 24 (UPI) -- Renault's Fernando Alonso won Sunday's San Marino Grand Prix Formula One race, finishing two-10ths of a second ahead of runner-up Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher, a seven-time yearly champion, started 13th after going off-course in the second qualifying session. He kept moving up by posting fastest laps of the day while the other drivers were on pit lane.

Despite a full fuel load, Schumacher had times 1.5 to 1.8 seconds faster than both Alonso and then second place Jenson Button.

When Alonso made his final stop, Schumacher passed Button to take the lead but still had to make one more stop and needed to expand his lead.

He built the lead to 14.5 seconds, but was running out of fuel and had to pit. He re-entered in second place behind Alonso with 13 laps remaining and couldn't catch up.
