No punishment for Sheffield

NEW YORK, April 20 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that New York outfielder Gary Sheffield will not be punished for his run-in with a fan in Boston.

Bob Watson, baseball's vice president for on-field operations, made the announcement.

Sheffield was brushed by a fan along the right field line in Fenway Park while fielding a ball and the outfielder pushed back at the fan before throwing the ball back to the infield.

After throwing the ball, however, Sheffield stopped before making another move toward the fan.

"We do not condone any interaction between fans and players whether initiated by either fans or players," Commissioner Bud Selig said.

"I am pleased that Gary Sheffield showed restraint in not overreacting to the improper and clearly aggressive action of the fan in question."
