MLB: Boston 10, Tampa Bay 0

BOSTON, April 15 (UPI) -- A grand slam homer by David Ortiz highlighted a seven-run second inning Friday night, sending Boston sailing past Tampa Bay, 10-0.

David Wells (1-2) pitched the first seven innings of the combined shutout to earn his first victory in a Boston uniform. He allowed six hits and struck out three.

Matt Mantei and John Halama completed the blanking.

Boston loaded the bases against Hideo Nomo in the second and Mark Bellhorn drove in two runs with a double.

Consecutive walks to Trot Nixon and Manny Ramirez accounted for another run and Ortiz then blasted his homer to right. It was his third career grand slam.

Nomo (1-1) gave up eight earned runs on five hits in two-plus innings.
