HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C., April 14 (UPI) -- With low scores difficult to come by, Peter Lonard managed a 9-under 62 Thursday for a two-shot lead after one round of the Heritage Classic.
Only 25 players broke par on a windy day at the Harbor Town Golf Links and just four were able to shoot lower than 68.
Lonard played the first 16 holes in 10-under and, with birdies on the final two holes, would have shot 59. But he left a 10-foot birdie effort short at the par-3 17th and then bogeyed the par-4 18th.
Patrick Sheehan was alone in fourth at 66. Former champion Davis Love, seeking to get back into the world's elite group of players, was among those tied for 10th at 2-under 69.
Most of the game's current superstars are taking the week off after the emotional grind of the Masters.
