MLB: New York Mets 6, Atlanta 1

ATLANTA, April 10 (UPI) -- Pedro Martinez allowed two hits in going the distance Sunday and the New York Mets won their first game of the season, 6-1 over Atlanta.

Carlos Beltran, Cliff Floyd and David Wright all hit home runs in a five-run eighth to give Martinez his first victory as a member of the Mets.

Martinez retired the last 16 Atlanta batters, giving Willie Randolph his first victory as manger of the Mets.

New York had opened the season with five straight losses for the first time in 42 years. The Mets were the last team in the majors to get a victory this season.

Atlanta's John Smoltz held New York scoreless through 7 1/3 innings and tied the franchise record for strikeouts with 15.

But the Mets got to Smoltz and the Braves in the eighth with a barrage long balls.
