Red Sox manager hospitalized

BOSTON, April 6 (UPI) -- Boston Manager Terry Francona was hospitalized in New York Wednesday with chest discomfort and then transferred to a Boston hospital later in the day.

Francona, whose team opened the season with a three-game series at Yankee Stadium, was taken by ambulance to Cornell Medical Center to undergo a series of tests.

"He experienced some chest stiffness earlier this morning," General Manager Theo Epstein said. "The best course of action was to take him to the hospital for precautionary tests."

Francona was already at the stadium when it was decided he should go to the hospital. He walked to the ambulance.

Bench coach Brad Mills managed the team in Francona'absence and the Red Sox defeated the Yankees 7-3.

A team spokesperson said Francona was able to listen the final few innings of his team's first win of the season.

It was not known when he would be able to return to the bench.
