Baylor wins women's NCAA championship

INDIANAPOLIS, April 5 (UPI) -- The Baylor Lady Bears posted an 84-62 victory over Michigan State in the NCAA championship game Tuesday night for the school's first women's basketball crown.

Sophia Young and Steffanie Blackmon scored 26 and 22 points respectively for the Lady Bears (33-3), who beat top-ranked LSU Sunday in their first Final Four game.

Baylor ended its season with 20 straight wins and became the first Big 12 team to win a championship in women's basketball. The 22-point margin was the second-largest in the women's final.

Kim Mulkey-Robertson became the first woman to win a national championship as both a player and a coach. She won two titles as a player at Louisiana Tech in the early 1980s.

Lindsay Bowen scored 20 points and Kristin Haynie had 17 to lead Michigan State (33-4). The Spartans had tied a women's Final Four record by overcoming a 16-point deficit to beat Tennessee in the national semifinals.
