DULUTH, Ga., April 4 (UPI) -- Three days before beginning his title defense at the Masters, Phil Mickelson won a five-man playoff Monday to capture the BellSouth Classic.
Mickelson holed a 15-foot birdie putt at the par-4 17th, the fourth playoff hole, to end a day on which a host of players had a chance to win.
Four others finished a shot back.
Atwal and Jobe, both seeking their first PGA Tour victory, were eliminated on the first playoff hole (the 18th) when they found the water in front of the green.
Olazabal, who missed five-foot putts on the final hole of regulation and the first of sudden death, also found the water on the third extra hole.
It was the third win of the year for Mickelson, who increased his lead at the top of the money standings.
Frank Lickliter and Lucas Glover both came to the final hole of regulation tied for the lead, but they both found the water -- Lickliter making a bogey and Glover a double bogey.
