Phelps, Hoff, Peirsol win at Swim Trials

INDIANAPOLIS, April 2 (UPI) -- Olympians Michael Phelps, Katie Hoff and Aaron Peirsol were all winners Saturday on the second day at the U.S. World Championship Swimming Trials.

Phelps, who won eight Olympic medals last summer, captured g the 200-meter freestyle in 1:46.44. Peter Vanderkaay finished second in 1:48.27.

Hoff won the 200-meter freestyle in 1:59.56. Mary DeScenza came in second at 1:59.93.

In the 100-meter backstroke, Peirsol broke his own world record of 53.45 seconds with a time of 53.17 seconds.

Five-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin had a time of 1:01.08 to win the 100-meter backstroke by more than a second.

Davis Tarwater won the men's 200-meter butterfly with a time of 1:58.71.

All winners will be on the U.S. team that will compete in the world championships in Montreal this summer.
