Mauresmo, Serena win in Miami

MIAMI, March 27 (UPI) -- Top seed Amelie Mauresmo and three-time defending champ Serena Williams both won Sunday in third-round action at the $3.06 million NASDAQ-100 Open.

Second seed Maria Sharapova also was a winner, as all top eight seeds advanced Sunday.

Mauresmo beat Anna Smashnova, 6-2, 6-1. She will play Karolina Sprem in fourth-round action Monday. Sprem beat Stephanie Cohen-Aloro, 6-2, 6-2.

Williams defeated Shahar Peer, 6-3, 6-3. The American next plays Elena Likhovtseva, who beat Ai Sugiyama, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
