Gooden arrested on domestic battery charge

TAMPA, Fla., March 14 (UPI) -- Former Yankees pitcher Dwight Gooden was arrested in Tampa for allegedly punching his girlfriend in the face, the New York Times reported Monday.

Tampa police said Gooden struck Monique Moore after she hit him in the head with part of a telephone. She called the police, and Gooden was arrested.

"Basically, there was a bruise starting to form on her face, which was consistent with the story she told," said Laura McElroy, the public information officer for the Tampa police. "We arrested him and charged him with one count of domestic battery."

Gooden, a special assistant in the baseball operations department for the Yankees, was being held without bond. He was scheduled to appear before a preliminary court judge Monday.
