VALENCIA, Calif., March 13 (UPI) -- Irishman Des Smyth shot a 4-under 68 Sunday for a 5-under 211 total to win the senior SBC Classic by one stroke.
Smyth's win came the same day that fellow Irishman Padraig Harrington won The Honda Classic on the PGA Tour.
Harrington was the first Irishman to win on the PGA Tour. Smyth, 52, is the second Irishman to win on the Champions Tour after Christy O'Connor, Jr.
D.A. Weibring had an even-par 72 Sunday and shared second place at 4-under 212 with Mark McNulty, who had a closing 74.
Craig Stadler was within one stroke of the lead during the final round, but dropped back to tie for fourth place with Gary McCord, who closed with a 73.
"I feel I stole it today," said Smyth, who earned $232,500. "I thought I'd need a 66 today. I didn't think a 68 would be good enough."
