Saints sign safety Dwight Smith

NEW ORLEANS, March 7 (UPI) -- The New Orleans Saints Monday signed free agent safety Dwight Smith to a five-year contract.

Smith was a third-round draft pick by Tampa Bay in 2001. He became the first player in Super Bowl history that year to return a pair of interceptions for touchdowns, accomplishing the feat against Oakland.

Smith has played in 63 games and has 223 tackles, including 192 solo and 12 interceptions. In 2004, he led the Buccaneers with five interceptions, his highest ever in a single year.

"His experience at cornerback and safety shows his versatility, and he is a solid, hard-hitting presence with the ball-hawking skills we are looking for in the secondary," said Coach Jim Haslett. "This signing improves our entire defense and our speed on the backside of the unit."

This off-season, the Bucs also signed former Philadelphia guard Jermaine Mayberry, another unrestricted free agent with Super Bowl experience.
