Mike Lonergan named hoops coach at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt., Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Maryland assistant Mike Lonergan was named men's basketball coach at Vermont Saturday.

Lonergan will succeed Tom Brennan, who ends a 19-year run at the school Sunday at Maine. The Catamounts are 21-5 (16-1 America East) heading into that contest.

"Tom Brennan is a tough act to follow," said A. John Bramley, the school's provost and senior vice president, "but I know that the program will be in great hands with Mike Lonergan."

Lonergan has been as assistant to Maryland Coach Gary Williams this season, following a 12-year run at Catholic University, where his teams were 251-88 and won the national Division III title in 2001.
