Dolphins release Jay Fiedler

DAVIE, Fla., Feb. 23 (UPI) -- The Miami Dolphins announced Wednesday they had cut veteran quarterback Jay Fiedler, who replaced Dan Marino in 2000 and started 59 games with the club.

Miami also released defensive end Jay Williams and safeties Arturo Freeman and Shawn Wooden.

Fiedler was part of an ongoing quarterback controversy during the 2004 season -- one in which he shared time with A.J. Feeley.

Fiedler started seven games and played in another, but wound up on injured reserve in November. He completed 101 of 190 passes last season for 1,186 yards.

As a starter, Fielder had a 36-23 record.
