Jets quarterback has shoulder surgey

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Feb. 8 (UPI) -- New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington had surgery Tuesday to repair a tear in his right rotator cuff.

Pennington will need three-to-four weeks of full rest with his arm in a sling and then three-to-four months of physical therapy.

His doctors are optimistic Pennington will be ready for the start of training camp in July.

Pennington was injured Nov. 7 in a loss to Buffalo when he was hit by Bills linebacker London Fletcher. He was sidelined for three games before returning for the final five of the season.

The Jets originally said the injury was a strain. A post-season MRI exam revealed further damage requiring surgery.

Pennington, who signed a seven-year, $64 million contract extension last September, completed 242 passes in 370 attempts (65 percent) for 2,673 yards with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
