Mariono, Young head 2005 Hall picks

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Former NFL quarterbacks Dan Marino and Steve Young were named Saturday to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The two were the only modern-era candidates elected this year. Also named were senior committee choices Benny Friedman and Fritz Pollard. All four will be inducted into the Hall Aug. 7 in Canton, Ohio.

A list of 15 finalists was reduced first to 10 and then six at a Saturday Selection Committee meeting. The two of the final six who were eliminated were linebacker Harry Carson and wide receiver Michael Irvin.

Marino spent all 17 years of his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins (1983-99) and owns career records for yards passing, completions and touchdown passes.

"It's really special," Marino said. "Considering there's only 28 quarterbacks in the Hall of Fame."

A two-time MVP with San Francisco, Young finished his career with 33,124 yards passing while throwing for 232 touchdowns.
