LA QUINTA, Calif., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Joe Ogilvie, seeking his first win on the PGA Tour, grabbed a three-shot lead Thursday after 36 holes of the five-round Bob Hope Classic.
Ogilvie, playing at the Bermuda Dunes Country Club, fired a 9-under 63 and posted a two-day total of 17-under 127.
In a tournament that traditionally features some of the lowest scoring of the season, defending champion Phil Mickelson vaulted into contention with a 64 and shared second place with Fredrik Jacobson at 130.
Jacobson also played at Bermuda Dunes, the easiest of the four courses used in this pro-am event, and shot a 62. Mickelson turned in a 64 at La Quinta.
Sharing fourth place at 131 were Fred Couples, Billy Mayfair, Jason Allred, Robert Damron and Peter Lonard.
Bill Haas, playing on a sponsor's exemption stood at 133 -- five shots in front of his father. Jay Haas, at age 51, is the 29th ranked player in the world.
In the other father-son combination playing in this tournament, the dad found himself in front.
Craig Stadler was at 135 while son Kevin was at 142.
