Eagles sign Thomason for Lewis

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Veteran tight end Jeff Thomason Tuesday signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 35-year-old Thomason, who has been out of the league the past two years, previously played three years for the Eagles before retiring after the 2002 season.

He replaces Chad Lewis, who suffered a sprained foot Sunday on the second of his two touchdown receptions against Atlanta in the NFC championship game, when Philadelphia avoided becoming the first team in NFL history to drop four straight conference title contests.

Lewis Tuesday was placed on the season-ending injured reserve list.

Ten of Thomason's 67 career catches have gone for touchdowns, including seven for Philadelphia.

The Eagles play New England in Super Bowl XXXIX Feb. 6 at Jacksonville, Fla.
