Matt Leinart to have elbow surgery

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart will have surgery for tendinitis in his left elbow, the school announced.

The procedure, described as "minor outpatient surgery," is scheduled Tuesday.

Leinart, who throws left-handed, won the Heisman Trophy and led the Trojans to an undefeated record and national championship in the 2004 season.

"I dealt with tendinitis in my elbow this past season," Leinart said Wednesday on the team's Web site. "It was never to the point where it bothered my performance. Our doctors recommended I have this minor procedure to clean up the tendinitis. They've told me that the success rate is excellent and I should be 100 percent going into the 2005 season. I've very confident that I'll be at 100 percent."

Leinart recently announced he would return for his senior season next fall, when USC bids for its third consecutive national title.
