Terps lose Strawberry to knee injury

COLLEGE PARK, Md., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The University of Maryland has lost guard D.J. Strawberry for the season with a knee injury.

Coach Gary Williams said Wednesday the 6-5 junior suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee when he was injured in practice earlier this week.

The native of Corona, Calif., and son of former major league basball star Darryl Strawberry is considered the Terps' best defender, and often was referred to as the team's sixth starter. He played in each of Maryland's first 14 games, averaging 7.1 points per contest.

Athletic trainer J.J. Bush said surgery on the knee will be performed next month and will require six months recovery time afterwards.

"We will miss D.J.'s aggressiveness and experience," Williams said. "D.J. is an outstanding team player. He is willing to do the `little things' that do not always show up on the stat sheet."
