Miller maintains big World Cup lead

WENGEN, Switzerland, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Michael Walchhofer of Austria won a men's World Cup downhill race Saturday while American Bode Miller continued his bid for the overall title.

Walchhofer was timed in 2:27.05 with Christoph Gruber of Austria second in 2:27.14. Miller finished third -- .17 of a second behind the winner.

Walchhofer holds the lead in downhill points this season, 431 to 378 for Miller.

But the American, who got off to a tremendous start to the campaign, is easily in front of the overall standings with 1,048 points.

Austrian Benjamin Raich is second in the overall at 790, followed by Walchhofer with 641.

In a women's downhill in Italy Saturday, Renate Goetschl of Austria picked up the win with Janica Kostelic of Croatia second and Lindsey Kildow of the United States third.

Goetschl and Kildow are 1-2 in the season-long downhill standings while Goetschl and Kostelic are 1-2 overall.
