SYDNEY, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Chennai champion Carlos Moya, last year's runnerup, was upset Tuesday at the Medibank International.
Defending champion Lleyton Hewitt of Australia and last week's Adelaide titlist Joachim Johansson of Sweden won at the Australian Open tune-up.
Hewitt, seeking his fourth title here in six years, beat Slovakian Karol Beck 6-1, 6-2, while the second-seeded Moya lost to Czech Radek Stepanek 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Hewitt was leading Moya 4-3 in the first set of last year's Sydney finale when the Spaniard retired with an ankle injury.
Johansson defeated Greg Rusedski of Great Britain 6-4, 6-3. .
