SAN DIEGO, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Doug Brien's 28-yard field goal Saturday night gave the New York Jets a 20-17 overtime victory over San Diego in a first-round playoff game.
Brien's kick capped a 60-yard drive and followed a 40-yard miss by Chargers rookie kicker Nate Kaeding.
New York had the game apparently won after a defensive stand inside the two-yard line with just seconds remaining in regulation. But linebacker Eric Barton got a roughing-the-passer penalty when he drove Drew Brees to the ground with a right forearm on fourth down.
Brees connected with Antonio Gates in the end zone for a one-yard touchdown pass on the next play, tying the game at 17-17 with 11 seconds on the clock.
Both teams went three-and-out on their first overtime possession.
Kaeding's miss came after Brees directed a 48-yard drive on San Diego's second possession in overtime.
