2 teams court Pats assistant coach Crennel

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- New England Patriots defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel is reportedly being courted by at least two NFL teams in need of coaches.

The San Francisco Chronicle says that John York, co-owner of the 49ers, flys east on Saturday for a meeting with Crennel. The 49ers fired Dennis Erickson earlier this week.

The Cleveland Browns met with Crennel on Friday.

Crennel has been an assistant coach with the Patriots for eight years and in the NFL for 24. The Chronicle reports that the 49ers interviewed Crennel in 2003 before hiring Erickson. General Manager Terry Donohue, who rejected Crennel, got the boot Wednesday along with Erickson.

Crennel helped lead the Patriots to Super Bowl wins in 2002 and 2004. He was assistant coach of the New York Giants under Bill Parcells when that team won two world championships.
