AD Geiger ending 11-year run at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Ohio State Athletic Director Andy Geiger announced his retirement Wednesday and said he'll leave the job in June.

"This is bittersweet," Geiger said. "It is my decision after months of thinking about this. After 33 years as an athletic director at five fine universities, I find that my work is no longer fun, and that I don't look forward with enthusiasm to each day."

Since Geiger, 65, became AD in 1994, OSU has built many new sports facilities and won 15 national championships, including the football title in 2002 under Coach Jim Tressel, but the football and basketball programs were rocked by scandals.

Trouble has included an NCAA investigation into Maurice Clarett's alleged acceptance of improper benefits while he was a running back for the Buckeyes. Tressel, university professors and boosters were all caught up in the scandal. They were accused by Clarett of providing cars, no-show jobs and preferential treatment in the classroom.

In another high-profile controversy, the university fired Jim O'Brien as basketball coach for allegedly giving $6,000 to a recruit. The school last month imposed a one-year post-season tournament ban on the men's team.
