Solich hired to coach Ohio U. Bobcats

ATHENS, Ohio, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Former Nebraska Coach Frank Solich was hired Thursday as head football coach of the Ohio University Bobcats.

Solich, a Cleveland native who coached the Cornhuskers to six consecutive bowl games, signed a multiyear contract with a base salary of $240,000.

"We are thrilled that Frank Solich will lead the Ohio football program into a new era and reclaim the winning tradition in Peden Stadium," Athletic Director Thomas Boeh said.

The 60-year-old Solich, who was fired by Nebraska after the 2003 season, succeeds Brian Knorr, who coached the Bobcats four seasons. Knorr was fired last month.

Solich's Nebraska teams had a 58-19 record in six seasons. He was an assistant on the Cornhuskers' staff for nearly two decades before becoming head coach.
