Erickson to stay with 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- After discussing a job opening with the University of Mississippi, San Francisco coach Dennis Erickson said Wednesday he would stay with the 49ers.

"It wasn't the right fit either way," Erickson said during a conference call visit with Washington media members in advance of this weekend's game between the Redskins and 49ers.

"It was just a visit, that's all it was," Erickson said. "We had good talks and they're going to go on and get a coach. It was a mutual thing and it was best for both parties."

Erickson met with Mississippi officials on Tuesday.

He is in his second year with the 49ers, who have won just twice this season. He has three years left on his contract.
