San Jose State begins search for new coach

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 23 (UPI) -- San Jose State Tuesday began searching for a new football coach after the surprise resignation of coach Fitz Hill.

Fitz resigned Monday at the request of the university's interim President Don Kassing, the San Jose Mercury-News said. The resignation stunned the San Jose State community.

"It's a shocker," defensive back Eric Wilson told the newspaper. "Nobody expected it. Him being a team leader, he wanted to do what's best for his players. He said if that's what's best for the program, that's what I'll do."

Hill, 40, was one of only five African-American coaches at the Division I-A level in college football. He finishes his fourth year at the Western Athletic Conference school with a record of 14-32 before Saturday's season finale against Fresno State and never had a winning season.

He already has accepted a "Visiting Scholar" position at the University of Central Florida's DeVos Sports Business Management Program.
