KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C., Nov. 19 (UPI) -- A missed five-foot putt on the 18th hole by Tom Kite Friday allowed the Rest of the World squad to take a one-point lead after one day of the UBS Cup.
Six fourball matches in the Ryder Cup-style event will be played Saturday and 12 singles matches are scheduled for Sunday.
The Rest of the World teams of Ian Woosnam-Sandy Lyle and Carl Mason-John Chillas recorded one-sided victories while the American teams of Hale Irwin-Fred Funk and Hal Sutton-Fred Couples posted wins.
Kite made a 30-foot putt at the 16th and holed a bunker shot at the 17th to keep his team even in their match. But Floyd ran a 20-foot putt five feet past the cup on the final green in the alternate-shot format and Kite missed the comebacker.
