Nets' Ron Mercer out with knee injury

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The New Jersey Nets will be without forward-guard Ron Mercer for at least the next month because of a knee injury.

The New York Post reported Thursday that the eight-year veteran will undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery Monday as doctors try to determine the cause of swelling in his left knee.

"We have no timetable for his return because they don't know exactly (what is wrong)," General Manager Ed Stefanski told the newspaper. "When they go in, they'll find out what it is and obviously do the procedure. But they don't know until they go in and scope it."

Mercer averaged 9.3 points per game in New Jersey's first three contests. The injury forced him to miss the last two games.

His backup, Rodney Buford, is struggling with a sprained left foot.
