American sprinter banned for life

DENVER, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- American sprinter Jerome Young was banned from competition for life Wednesday by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

For the second time, Young tested positive for a banned substance and the action against him could wind up costing members of the U.S. gold-medal winning 1,600-meter relay team from the Sydney Olympics.

Although Young did not run in the finals of that event, he did run a leg in the semifinals. The international track and field governing body has recommended that every member of that team be stripped of their gold medal.

World record holder Michael Johnson ran the anchor leg on that team.
