Spurrier won't return to Gators

GAINESVILLE, Fla., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Former Florida Coach Steve Spurrier said Thursday he will not be a candidate to replace Ron Zook as coach of the Gators.

"I have informed Jeremy Foley, our athletic director, that I am withdrawing from consideration for the head coaching position at my alma mater," Spurrier said.

"I have not been offered any coaching job by any team, and I'm not searching for one."

Spurrier left Florida to coach the NFL's Washington Redskins in 2002. He had two unsuccessful seasons in Washington and now is unemployed.

UF told Zook last week that he would be terminated at season's end. Zook replaced Spurrier in 2002.

"I respect Coach Spurrier's decision to withdraw from the process," Foley said.

Spurrier coached the Gators from 1990 to 2001, winning one national championship and seven Southeastern Conference titles.
