Bowden takes interim GM job for new team

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Former Cincinnati Reds General Manager Jim Bowden has been named interim GM of Washington's new major league team.

The Washington club -- formerly the Montreal Expos -- is now owned by the other clubs in the majors and is up for sale, with several prospective buyers. Bowden said he took the job on an interim basis until new owners put in their own management team.

"I think the transition period is very important between moving into Washington and getting new ownership," Bowden said. "I think new ownership should have the right to put in their management team that they're comfortable with. But I think in the meantime it's important the baseball operations department is run in the best way possible, so when a new owner takes over the organization is going in the right direction."

Bowden, who was general manager of the Reds for more than 10 years, actually replaces Omar Minaya, who left as GM of the Expos in September to take the same job with the New York Mets.
