Major League all-stars prepare for Japan

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- World Series MVP Manny Ramirez and other members of a team of U.S. baseball stars leave Tuesday for the Japan All-star Series 2004.

The U.S. team had its first workout Monday for the eight-game series, which is played every two years.

The team will play a team of Japanese stars in Tokyo, Fukuoka, Osaka, Sapporo and Nagoya.

San Diego Padres Manager Bruce Bochy heads the U.S. squad. Bochy has named veteran Houston Astros right-hander Roger Clemens as his Game 1 starter.

The American team includes outfielder Ramirez's Boston Red Sox teammate, first baseman David Ortiz; pitchers Jason Marquis, Ray King and Kiko Calero of St. Louis Cardinals, Dontrelle Wilis of Florida, Kyle Lohse of Minnesota and Mark Redman of Oakland; outfielder Moises Alou of the Chicago Cubs, shortstop Miguel Cabrera of Florida and third baseman Hank Blalock of the Texas Rangers.
