NCAA clears Neuheisel

SEATTLE, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Rick Neuheisel, fired by the University of Washington for taking part in a basketball pool, was cleared of wrongdoing by the NCAA Wednesday.

The NCAA, however, extended Washington's current probationary status for two extra years.

Washington will remain on probation through Feb. 9, 2007. The school was originally placed on probation for basketball recruiting violations, but the NCAA also reprimanded Washington for a lack of control over its football program.

The NCAA told school officials that Neuheisel had been cleared because the coach had been sent a memo saying that gambling pools were allowed.

Neuheisel was fired 17 months for taking part in an expensive NCAA basketball tournament pool. Wednesday's report from the NCAA said others within the school's athletic department had taken part in gambling pools, including the compliance officer.
