Costa, Corretja highlight Madrid Masters

MADRID, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Spaniards Albert Costa and Alex Corretja highlighted Monday's opening round at the Masters Series Madrid.

Costa, the 2002 French Open champion Costa held off Georgian Irakli Labadze 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, while the two-time French Open runner-up Corretja beat Spaniard David Ferrer 7-5, 6-1.

American Olympic silver medalist Mardy Fish dropped the first set at love against Wimbledon semifinalist Mario Ancic before charging back for a 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over the Croat.

Belarusian Max Mirnyi, the 2001 Madrid runner-up, defeated Spaniard David Sanchez 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Winner of this $3.035 million indoor-hardcourt event will collect $557,000.
