BOSTON, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- David Ortiz's single in the 14th inning scored Johnny Damon Monday as Boston beat the New York Yankees, 5-4, in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series.
That cut the Yankees edge to 3-2 in the best-of-7 series with Game 6 in New York Tuesday.
Ortiz, who won Game 4 with a two-out homer in the 12th Sunday, also homered and drove in three runs for the Red Sox, who became just the third team in postseason history to force a Game 6 after falling behind three games to none.
With one out in the 14th inning, Damon worked a walk off New York reliever Esteban Loaiza. After Orlando Cabrera struck out, Manny Ramirez walked. Ortiz fouled off a number of pitches before looping a 2-2 pitch to center to score Damon from second.
Bernie Williams, who had earlier homered for the Yankees, failed to make a throw on the play.
