ATLANTA, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Baltimore running back Jamal Lewis agreed Thursday to a plea agreement in his drug conspiracy case and will serve four months in prison.
In addition to the jail time, Lewis will spend two months in a halfway house and will perform 500 hours of community service.
Lewis pleaded guilty to using a cell phone to help set up a drug transaction more than four years ago. He also had been charged with cocaine possession, but that will be dropped under the agreement.
The star running back will be able to serve time after the 2004 season and prior to the 2005 campaign. NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, however, is expected to suspend Lewis for a number of games.
"I made a mistake four years ago when I was 20 years old, which I'm paying heavily for, which I had to suffer the consequences, which I'm willing to do," Lewis in a statement released Thursday.
The FBI report accused Lewis of trying to help a friend buy cocaine in what turned out to be a sting operation.
