Gibbons officially named Blue Jays manager

TORONTO, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- John Gibbons was promoted from interim to full-time manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, the team announced Monday.

Gibbons, 41, had taken over when Carlos Tosca was fired Aug. 8. Under Gibbons, the Blue Jays were 20-30. They ended up in last place in the American League East.

The team's general manager, J. P. Ricciardi, said he liked the positive attitude Gibbons had displayed while leading the team.

Gibbons had previously managed in the New York Mets system and was a coach on the Toronto staff before becoming manager.

The Toronto club also announced thad Brad Arnsberg is the new pitching coach and Ernie Whitt was hired as bench coach.
